What GTM engineers use, what each tool costs, and which stack fits your stage.
Most GTM engineers run five layers: a CRM like HubSpot or Salesforce, Clay for data and enrichment, an automation tool like n8n or Zapier, a sequencer for outbound, and an LLM like Claude. In a 2026 survey of 228 GTM engineers (State of GTME), 83.8% use Clay.
Two kinds of data show what’s in the stack: what GTM engineers say they use, and what job posts ask for.
| Tool or category | GTM engineers who use it (State of GTME 2026) | Job posts that mention it |
|---|---|---|
| CRM (Salesforce or HubSpot) | 88.6% | HubSpot 52%, Salesforce 45% (Bloomberry) |
| Clay | 83.8% | Named the most popular tool, no share given (Bloomberry) |
| Cursor | 69.7% | Not reported |
| ZoomInfo or Apollo | 64.9% | Apollo 29% (Bloomberry) |
| Claude Code | 62.7% | Claude or Claude Code in 38% in the latest month (Cargo) |
| Scraping tools | 60.5% | Not reported |
| n8n | 59.6% | 28% (Bloomberry) |
| Zapier | 42.5% | 39% (Bloomberry) |
| Outreach | 12.7% | 49% (Bloomberry) |
Look at Outreach. About half the job posts ask for it, and about one in eight GTM engineers uses it. Job posts list the sales tools a company already owns. GTM engineers spend their day in Clay, an automation tool, and an AI coding tool.
Entry prices from each vendor’s pricing page on October 28, 2026. “Annual” means billed yearly.
| Tool | Layer | Entry price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HubSpot Sales Hub | CRM | See current pricing | The page showed two Starter prices without a label |
| Salesforce Sales Cloud | CRM | Starter Suite $25 a user a month | Pro Suite $100 a user a month, billed annually |
| Attio | CRM | Free plan. Plus $35 a user a month annual, $44 monthly. | Pro is $79 annual, $99 monthly |
| Clay | Data and enrichment | See current pricing | Its plan cards and its FAQ listed different prices |
| Apollo | Data and enrichment | See current pricing | Paid prices didn’t load when we checked |
| n8n | Automation | Starter €20 a month (2,500 executions), annual | Pro €50 a month (10,000 executions). A self-hosted Community Edition is also available. |
| Zapier | Automation | Pro $19.99 a month annual, $29.99 monthly (750 tasks) | Team from $69 annual, $103.50 monthly (2,000 tasks) |
| Make | Automation | See current pricing | Paid prices didn’t load when we checked |
| Smartlead | Outbound | See current pricing | The page showed two different prices for the same plans |
| Instantly | Outbound | Growth $37.60 a month annual, $47 monthly | Hypergrowth showed two different prices, so check the pricing page |
| Claude Team | AI | Standard seat $20 a month annual, $25 monthly | Premium seat $100 annual, $125 monthly. 2 to 150 seats. |
| ChatGPT Business | AI | See current pricing | The page didn’t load when we checked |
| Common Room | Signals (optional) | Essential $2,500 a month, annual, 5 seats | Worth it once you have enough community and product signals to act on |
Why some rows say “see current pricing”: when a vendor’s own page showed two different prices, or didn’t load, we left the price out. We’d rather send you to the vendor than print a number that’s wrong.
These three get compared all the time, and they do different jobs.
Our default recommendation is Clay plus n8n, and keeping Zapier only where it’s already in place.
This is our recommendation. No survey covers it.
| Stage | Stack | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Founder-led sales, fewer than 20 people | HubSpot Starter or Attio, Clay, Smartlead or Instantly, Claude Team | You need lists, enrichment, and outbound. Skip the automation tool until there’s a process to automate. |
| First sales team, 20 to 200 people | Add n8n, move to HubSpot Professional or Salesforce, add Apollo or ZoomInfo if Clay credits run high | Routing, scoring, and speed to lead start to matter. This is when a GTM engineer pays off. |
| Scaling, 200+ people | Salesforce, a data warehouse, reverse ETL, a signals tool like Common Room | The job shifts to data models and governance. Expect your GTM engineer to work with RevOps. |
At 200 people and up, the line between building and governing matters more. We cover it in GTM engineer vs RevOps.
Most entry tiers we could price cost $35 a seat or less per month. The Pro tiers run about $50 to $125. Common Room is the exception. The person who runs the stack is the real cost: a U.S. GTM engineer costs about $15,200 to $18,900 a month with benefits, based on 2026 medians of $127,500 (Bloomberry) to $159,000 (Cargo) and the 30% benefits share the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported for June 2026.
A Clay seat doesn’t build anything on its own. Here’s how we check that a builder can:
A full-time Marketing Engineer through GrowthPair costs about $4,000 a month, all-in. They build the GTM systems this stack is for: Clay tables, n8n workflows, and CRM routing. The full comparison is in what it costs to hire a GTM engineer.
Mostly a CRM, Clay, an automation tool, a sequencer, and an LLM. In State of GTME 2026, 88.6% of GTM engineers use a CRM, 83.8% use Clay, 69.7% use Cursor, 62.7% use Claude Code, and 59.6% use n8n.
For long or high-volume workflows, yes. n8n bills per workflow run and Zapier bills per action step, so multi-step workflows cost less on n8n. Zapier is fine for simple triggers your team already runs there.
Not on day one, but most GTM engineers use it. 83.8% of the 228 GTM engineers in State of GTME 2026 do. Check Clay’s pricing page for current plans, since its prices conflicted when we checked.
The entry tiers we could price run about $20 to $50 a seat or plan per month, and Pro tiers about $50 to $125. Clay, HubSpot Starter, and Smartlead need a look at current pricing. The person who runs it costs far more: about $15,200 to $18,900 a month for a U.S. hire with benefits.
Some. Cargo found Python in 40% of GTM engineer job posts and SQL in 38% (2026). Most also use AI coding tools: 69.7% use Cursor and 62.7% use Claude Code (State of GTME 2026).
