How much does a marketing team cost?

The real monthly cost of a first hire, a three-person team, and a five-person team, three ways.

The short answer

A first U.S. marketing hire costs about $9,400 a month once benefits are added, based on the federal median for marketing specialists. A three-person team runs about $36,700 a month, and five people about $55,100. The same headcount through GrowthPair costs about $4,000 a month per full-time marketer.

What a marketing team costs, by size

Most teams grow in the same order: one generalist, then a lead with a specialist and a designer, then a second specialist and video. Here’s what each stage costs per month in the U.S., using Bureau of Labor Statistics medians plus benefits, next to the same headcount through GrowthPair.

TeamRolesU.S. in-house, per monthThrough GrowthPair, per month
First hire1 marketing specialistAbout $9,400About $4,000
Three peopleMarketing manager, marketing specialist, graphic designerAbout $36,700About $12,000
Five peopleMarketing manager, 2 marketing specialists, graphic designer, video editorAbout $55,100About $20,000

Those U.S. numbers are pay and benefits only. They leave out recruiting fees, software, ad spend, and the months a seat sits empty while you hire. We cover those below.

How we got the U.S. numbers

Every U.S. figure starts from a federal median, then adds benefits.

Role (BLS title)Median base, May 2025With benefits, per yearPer month
Marketing managers$166,790$238,271$19,856
Market research analysts and marketing specialists$78,760$112,514$9,376
Film and video editors$75,420$107,743$8,979
Graphic designers$62,960$89,943$7,495

The medians come from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025, the latest release. BLS also reports that benefits were 30% of total compensation for private-industry workers in June 2026. So we divide each base salary by 0.70 to get the full cost, then by 12.

Medians are a middle, not a ceiling. In New York or San Francisco, or for someone with 8+ years in a channel, expect to pay more.

What it costs to hire one marketing person

The salary is the biggest line. It isn’t the only one.

  • Recruiting fee. Contingency recruiters charge 15% to 25% of first-year base salary, per Dover. On a $78,760 marketing specialist, that’s about $11,800 to $19,700.
  • Time to fill. SHRM’s 2026 benchmarking puts the median time to fill a nonexecutive role at 39 calendar days. Add the new hire’s notice period on top.
  • Ramp time. A new marketer needs time to learn your product, your voice, and your tools before their output is at full speed. You pay full salary during that stretch.
  • Re-hire risk. Gallup estimates replacing an employee costs one-half to two times their annual salary. For a $78,760 role, that’s about $39,400 to $157,500 if the hire doesn’t work out.

You can still hire in the U.S. Budget for the full cost of “one marketing person,” though: about $9,400 a month, plus a one-time fee and a month or two of lag.

Which marketing roles to hire first

Cost depends on the order you hire in. Here’s the order we recommend for most growing teams.

  • A generalist first. Your first hire should run two or three channels, test fast, and report on what works. That’s a Growth Marketer. A specialist this early sits idle when their one channel isn’t the answer yet.
  • A specialist for the channel that works. Once one channel drives most of your pipeline, like paid social, email, or SEO, hire someone who goes deep on it.
  • Creative when output becomes the bottleneck. When campaigns wait on design or video, add a graphic designer or video editor. Ads and social burn through creative fast.
  • A leader when the team needs direction. Hire a marketing manager when three or more people need priorities, budgets, and a plan. Before that, a founder or growth lead can usually steer.

Hiring in this order keeps the expensive seat, the manager, for when there’s a team to manage.

The agency alternative

Agencies price by channel and scope, so compare them channel by channel.

  • Social media. HeyOrca surveyed almost 100 agencies for its 2026 benchmarks, published in October 2026. 31% charge under $1,000 a month per client, and 49% charge $1,000 to $2,499. Our social media manager cost guide breaks it down.
  • SEO. Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers and found agencies average $3,209 a month on retainer (updated August 2024). Weighing an SEO hire instead? See how to hire an SEO/AEO specialist.

Put a social agency at the top of HeyOrca’s most common band and add an average SEO agency, and you’re near $5,700 a month for two channels. That buys a share of a team’s time, set by the scope in your contract.

Where an agency wins: if you need one channel at low volume, or senior strategy for a quarter, an agency or a freelancer often costs less than any full-time hire, including ours. Agencies get expensive when you need daily execution across three or more channels, because every channel is its own retainer.

The same team through GrowthPair

A full-time marketer through GrowthPair costs about $4,000 a month, all-in. That covers the marketer, payroll, benefits, and HR, with a replacement guarantee for as long as you’re a client. It’s month-to-month with 30 days’ notice, billed every two weeks through Stripe.

Our homepage calculator uses round numbers for the same comparison. It assumes each U.S. marketing hire costs $133,000 a year in payroll and each global marketing hire costs $48,000. Our average payroll savings against a U.S. hire is 64%.

We place marketers with at least three years in their function, so you can keep the head of marketing in-house and fill the seats under them through us. With a U.S. marketing manager at about $19,856 a month, that’s about $27,900 for a three-person team and $35,900 for five.

Egg Health shows what one seat can do. Its founder hired a full-time Growth Marketer through us to run content, email, and LinkedIn ads, and Egg grew 158% in 120 days.
