What does a social media manager cost per month?

A full-time U.S. hire, a freelancer or agency, and a full-time global marketer, side by side.

The short answer

A full-time U.S. social media manager costs about $7,300 to $7,800 a month once benefits are added, based on Indeed and Payscale pay data. Most social media agencies charge under $2,500 a month per client for part-time scope. A full-time social marketer through GrowthPair costs about $4,000 a month, all-in.

Three numbers side by side

The price only makes sense next to what you get for it. A freelancer’s retainer buys a set number of posts. A full-time hire buys a person’s whole week. Here’s how the three options compare.

The U.S. full-time number

The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t track social media managers as their own job, so we use two dated pay sources.

SourceAverage base salaryWith benefits, per monthBased on
Indeed$65,734About $7,8263,200 salaries from job posts, updated October 18, 2026
Payscale$61,083About $7,2722,285 salary profiles, updated September 28, 2026

Benefits were 30% of total compensation for U.S. private-industry workers in June 2026, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. So we divide base pay by 0.70 for the full cost, then by 12. Payscale puts the 90th percentile at $88,000, so a senior manager in a big city costs well above these averages.

What freelancers and agencies charge

Agencies and freelancers price by scope, so the number depends on how many platforms and posts you buy.

  • HeyOrca, 2026. In a survey of almost 100 agencies, 31% charge under $1,000 a month per client, 49% charge $1,000 to $2,499, 9% charge $2,500 to $4,999, and 3% charge more than $5,000.
  • HeyOrca, 2024. Across 100+ agency and freelance social media managers, the average retainer was $2,107 a month for three platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook), three posts per platform a week, 5 to 10 hours of community management a week, and reporting. The average hourly rate was $66.96. Freelancers with 7+ years averaged $2,765 a month.
  • WebFX, 2026. The agency quotes $500 to $5,000 a month for social media packages from an agency or freelancer.

Read the scope before the price. HeyOrca’s average package is about nine posts a week and up to 10 hours of community work a week. A full-time hire works 40 hours a week.

When a freelancer is the better buy: if you’re a small business posting a few times a week on one or two platforms, a freelancer at $1,000 to $2,000 a month is the cheaper, smarter choice. Full-time makes sense when social is a daily channel: short-form video, community replies, multiple brands, and reporting that feeds your other campaigns.

Set the scope before you compare prices

Two quotes for the same price can cover very different work. Pin these down first.

  • Platforms and post count. Three platforms at three posts a week is a different job from five platforms posting daily.
  • Video. HeyOrca lists video as a common extra outside the core agency package. If short-form video is the plan, price it in from the start.
  • Community management. 75% of the agencies HeyOrca surveyed include it, so a quarter don’t. Ask how many hours of replies and DMs you get.
  • Paid social. Only 18% of those agencies include it. Boosted posts and ad campaigns usually cost extra.
  • Strategy and reporting. 93% include strategy and 81% include reporting. Ask what the monthly report shows and who acts on it.

Write the scope as a list of weekly outputs. Then every quote, from a freelancer, an agency, or us, answers the same question.

The hidden costs of a full-time hire

The salary is the number on the job post. These are the ones that show up later.

  • Recruiting fee. Contingency recruiters charge 15% to 25% of first-year base salary, per Dover. On Indeed’s $65,734 average, that’s about $9,900 to $16,400.
  • Time to fill. SHRM’s 2026 benchmarking puts the median time to fill a nonexecutive role at 39 calendar days, and your channels sit quiet while you hire.
  • Ramp time. A new social media manager needs weeks to learn your voice, your audience, and your approval process before posting at full speed.
  • Re-hire risk. Gallup estimates replacing an employee costs one-half to two times their annual salary. On a $65,734 hire, that’s about $32,900 to $131,500.

Here’s how we handle three of them. Sourcing and vetting are covered by the monthly rate. Most teams go from agreement to start date in about 3 weeks. If your marketer isn’t the right fit, we replace them for as long as you’re a client, and our replacement rate is about 5%.

What you get for about $4,000 a month

A GrowthPair Social Marketer works full-time on your brand only, in your time zone. They plan and run your content calendar, publish static posts and short-form video, reply to comments and DMs, and report on engagement. They write platform-native captions too.

Every one has at least three years in social and passed our five-step vetting: resume screen, phone interview, proctored skills assessment, live interview with a marketer, and your interview. About 1.5% of applicants are accepted, and every candidate is tested for C1 English.

The Fresh Chile Company, a top 1% Shopify brand, had inconsistent social content and slow execution. Its Social Marketer was embedded in the team in under two weeks, and social output went up without a drop in quality. Read the Fresh Chile case study.
