A GTM engineer job description should name the pipeline problem you want solved, the tools they’ll own, who they report to, and how you’ll measure them in 90 days. Post a pay range: mid-level U.S. medians run $150,000 to $155,000 (RevGuild, Cargo, 2026). The template is below.
We read five live GTM engineer postings on October 21, 2026. Each one fits one of three types. Pick one before you write a word.
| Type | What they own | Example posting and posted base |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing-side | Lead scoring, inbound enrichment and routing, speed to lead, the handoff from marketing to SDRs | Clay, “GTM Engineer - Marketing,” $150,000 to $220,000 |
| Outbound and research | Enrichment, ICP fit scoring, AI agents that research accounts and draft proposals | Sierra, “GTM Engineer,” $150,000 to $230,000 |
| Systems and data | The CRM data model, identity resolution, routing and territory rules, reverse ETL | Modal, “GTM Engineer - Data Platform,” $200,000 to $220,000. Watershed, $154,000 to $188,000. |
A fourth kind writes production software for sales teams. Vanta’s “Sr. AI Engineer” on its revenue GTM team ($195,000 to $229,000) asks for 5+ years of software engineering. If that’s your role, you’re hiring a software engineer, and this template won’t fit. A JD that asks for all four types attracts generalists.

Pay [Range]. [Benefits.]
Most GTM engineer postings carry lines that scare off good builders or let weak ones through. Here’s what we left out.
Two 2026 sources report U.S. GTM engineer pay by level. Both use job posts that listed pay.
| Level | Years (our mapping) | Cargo median | RevGuild median base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 0 to 2 | Not reported | $113,000 |
| Mid | 2 to 5 | $155,000 | $150,000 |
| Senior | 5+ | $175,000 | $188,000 |
| Staff or leader | 7+ | $219,000 | $225,000 |
Neither source defines levels by years, so the years column is ours. Location shifts the range too: Cargo found a $170,000 median in San Francisco and New York, against $147,500 for fully remote roles. To see what a salary costs once benefits are added, read what it costs to hire a GTM engineer.
A JD line is only useful if you can test it. Our marketers interview every builder candidate before you meet them, and these are the checks they run against each line above.
| JD line | What we ask | What a pass sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Build enrichment workflows | “How would you enrich 1,000 contacts today, and what would it cost?” | A waterfall across a few data providers, a rough credit cost, and a check for bad matches. A weak answer names one tool. |
| Design scoring and routing | “Design a lead scoring model for us. How would you know it works?” | Fit plus intent, a small number of inputs, and a test against the last two quarters of closed-won deals |
| Signal-based outbound | “Clay or n8n: enrich 500 accounts a week and alert the owner in Slack when one raises money?” | Clay for the table, n8n or a native integration for the alert, with a reason for each |
| AI research workflows | “An AI draft went out with the wrong company name. What do you change?” | A check before anything sends, a sample review, and a rule for when the AI shouldn’t send at all |
| Document what you build | “How do you keep the CRM clean when you’re the one adding fields?” | Naming rules, written docs, and a check-in with whoever owns the CRM |
| 90-day goals | “You have six months to double pipeline with no new headcount. What do you build first?” | They ask about your funnel before they answer, then pick the biggest manual bottleneck |
| Clear written English | A C1 English assessment | Required for every GrowthPair candidate |
We also ask what they’d cut from something they built. Clay’s hiring guide flags over-engineering, so we want to hear a builder name an over-built system of their own and what they’d do instead. These checks run inside our five-step vetting, and 1.5% of applicants make it through.
We place Marketing Engineers, who build the GTM systems in this JD: Clay tables, n8n workflows, and CRM routing. If you’d rather skip the posting, we’ll pair you with one for about $4,000 a month, all-in.
The pipeline problem you want solved, the tools they’ll own, who they report to, how you’ll measure them in 90 days, and a pay range. Lead with the problem. It’s the part a strong builder reads first.
Building enrichment workflows, designing lead scoring and routing, setting up signal-based outbound, building AI research workflows, and connecting tools with APIs and webhooks. Most roles lean toward one of three types: marketing-side, outbound and research, or systems and data.
Two to five years for most roles. Bloomberry found postings ask for 4.11 years on average. The title is new, so count years in growth, marketing ops, or RevOps, plus systems they’ve built.
Mid-level U.S. medians run $150,000 to $155,000 a year and senior medians $175,000 to $188,000, per RevGuild and Cargo (2026). San Francisco and New York pay more than fully remote roles.
Usually not. Cargo found Python in 40% of GTM engineer posts. List SQL as a requirement and Python as a plus, unless the person will ship production software.
