How to hire a GTM engineer

Where to look, what to check, which hiring model fits, and how long it takes.

The short answer

To hire a GTM engineer, name the pipeline problem, source where builders share their work, and make every finalist walk you through a system they built. A U.S. hire costs about $15,200 to $18,900 a month with benefits. Through GrowthPair, a full-time Marketing Engineer costs about $4,000.

How to hire a GTM engineer, step by step

Here’s the order we’d run it in. Each step has its own section below. Still deciding if you need one? Start with what a GTM engineer does.

  • Name the problem. Write down the manual work you want gone, like reps researching accounts by hand or inbound leads waiting a day for a reply. Clay’s hiring guide says to wait until you have repeatable processes to systematize. Before product-market fit, there’s nothing stable to automate.
  • Pick a hiring model. Full-time U.S. hire, freelancer, agency, or a full-time global hire. The right one depends on how much building you’ll need every month.
  • Source where builders show their work. Communities, job boards built for the role, and workflow posts on LinkedIn turn up better candidates than a title search.
  • Screen for proof. Look for a system they built, what it changed, and what broke. A long tools list proves little.
  • Run live checks. Have them open their work on a screen share, then let your team meet the finalists.

Full-time, freelancer, agency, or a global hire

Your four options, side by side. The U.S. figure uses 2025 and 2026 medians from Bloomberry, RevGuild, and Cargo, with benefits added.

Our take: a freelancer is the right call for one Clay table or one routing fix. Once you want something new built every month, a full-time hire wins on cost and on context, because they learn your funnel instead of relearning it each project. The full math is in what it costs to hire a GTM engineer.

A plain note on titles: we don’t place anyone called a GTM engineer. We place Marketing Engineers, who build the same GTM systems: Clay tables, n8n workflows, and CRM routing. If your search is about building pipeline systems, that’s the hire we’d pair you with.

Where to find GTM engineers

Many of the best ones already have jobs and aren’t applying anywhere. Clay’s hiring guide makes the same point. So go where they post their work.

  • Clay’s job board and Slack community. Clay’s hiring guide lists both as sourcing channels, along with The GTM Engineer Lab community and The GTM Engineer newsletter (April 2026).
  • LinkedIn workflow posts. Search for people who share screenshots of systems they’ve built. That filters for builders better than a job title does.
  • RevOps and marketing ops groups. Clay describes the typical background as sales ops, RevOps, or marketing ops, so a lot of good builders still sit in those communities.
  • Other titles. Betts Recruiting points out that many candidates don’t use the GTM engineer title. It suggests searching growth engineer, marketing developer, and RevOps engineer too (December 2025).
  • Clay’s Experts directory, if you want an agency. It listed 196 partners when we checked in October 2026. It has no staffing or full-time hire category.

A badge tells you less right now. Clay paused new certifications on March 17, 2026, and they were still paused when we checked on October 28. Plenty of good builders started after the pause. Ask to see the work.

What to look for before the interview

Clay calls the profile a hybrid: part commercial thinker, part builder. On a resume, that shows up as four signals.

  • A system with a before and after. “Built inbound routing, and speed to lead went from a day to ten minutes” tells you more than a list of 20 tools.
  • Time on the commercial side. Some sales or marketing experience, so they know where automation helps a deal and where it hurts one. Clay lists weak commercial awareness as a red flag.
  • Proof they keep learning. The tools change every quarter. Look for something they taught themselves this year, like Claude Code or a new API.
  • Clear writing. They’ll document every system so your team can run it. If the resume is hard to follow, the docs will be too.

Go easy on years in the title. The 2026 State of GTME survey of 228 GTM engineers put the median time in the role at one year, so “5 years as a GTM engineer” screens out most of the people doing the job today. Ask for years in growth, ops, or RevOps instead. Our GTM engineer job description is written that way.

Interview checks that separate builders from operators

Every GrowthPair candidate is interviewed by a marketer before you meet them. These are the checks our marketers run for builder roles. You can run them yourself.

CheckWhat we askWhat a pass looks like
Built or operated“Walk me through the last system you built from scratch. What triggered it?”A specific workflow: the trigger, the tools it touches, and the result. A weak answer lists tools.
Live walkthrough“Share your screen and open a Clay table or n8n workflow you built.”They explain every step without notes and know why each one is there.
Failure“Tell me about a workflow that broke.”How they found out, what it cost, and the alert they added after.
Data judgment“Sales says the leads are bad. What do you check first?”Data before opinions: lead source, time to first touch, conversion by rep.
Deliverability“Reply rates fell by half last month. Where do you look?”Domain health, bounces, and list quality before the copy. Clay flags ignoring deliverability as a red flag.
AI in production“Show me a prompt or agent you run. How do you catch bad output?”A review step or a sample check, and rules for when the AI shouldn’t send.
Written EnglishA C1 English assessmentRequired for every GrowthPair candidate

These checks sit inside our five-step vetting: resume screen, phone interview, proctored skills assessment, live interview, and your interview. 1.5% of applicants are accepted. You meet the finalists and pick your hire.

How long it takes to hire a GTM engineer

We couldn’t find a sourced average for a U.S. GTM engineer search, so here are the stages to plan for, and who does each one.

The notice period is the part you can’t speed up. Most strong candidates have a job, and they’ll give notice before they start. Once your hire starts, most GrowthPair hires ramp within a week.

FAQs

How do you hire a GTM engineer?

Name the pipeline problem you want fixed, pick a hiring model, source in communities where builders share their work, and make every finalist walk you through a system they built on a screen share. Then let your team interview the finalists.

Where do you find GTM engineers?

Clay’s job board and Slack community, The GTM Engineer Lab, LinkedIn posts where people share workflows, and RevOps or marketing ops groups. Also search adjacent titles like growth engineer and RevOps engineer, since many candidates don’t use the GTM engineer title.

Should you hire a GTM engineer, a freelancer, or an agency?

A freelancer for one build with a clear finish line. An agency if you want someone else to run the whole outbound program. A full-time hire once you want new systems built every month, since they keep the context.

Does a GTM engineer need a Clay certification?

No. Clay paused new certifications on March 17, 2026, and they were still paused in late October. Judge candidates on a system they built and can explain step by step.

Does GrowthPair place GTM engineers?

We place Marketing Engineers, who build GTM systems like Clay tables, n8n workflows, and CRM routing. They’re full-time, work your time zone, and cost about $4,000 a month, all-in.

Hire the builder without running the search

We’ll pair you with a vetted Marketing Engineer who builds Clay tables, n8n workflows, and CRM routing, in about 3 weeks.
