What the role does, the skills behind it, who it reports to, and what one costs to hire.
A GTM engineer is a builder on your revenue team. They wire your CRM, data, and AI tools into automated systems that find, enrich, score, and route leads, so pipeline grows without adding reps. U.S. median pay runs $127,500 to $159,000 a year, depending on the source.
Clay, the data enrichment platform, says it coined the term in 2023. Its definition is close to ours: GTM engineering means building revenue engines with data, AI, and automation instead of adding headcount.
The title spread fast. Bloomberry counted 205% more GTM engineer and RevOps job posts from January to September 2025 than in the same months of 2024. By mid-2026, Cargo had collected 1,350 GTM engineer job descriptions in three months. It’s still a young group, though. The 2026 State of GTME survey of 228 GTM engineers put the median time in the role at one year.
You hire a GTM engineer to take the manual work out of your pipeline. In practice, that looks like this:
Under all of it sits plumbing: connecting tools with APIs and webhooks, and keeping the data clean when something breaks. Five live postings we read in October 2026, from Clay, Sierra, Vanta, Modal, and Watershed, all list some mix of these. Every one names a CRM, and four of the five name Clay. The tools behind this work are in the GTM engineer tech stack.
Most skills lists stop at the list. Here’s what we look for, and how our marketers check it in interviews before you meet anyone.
| Skill | How common it is | How we check it |
|---|---|---|
| CRM admin (HubSpot or Salesforce) | In 57% of postings (Cargo). 88.6% of GTM engineers use a CRM (State of GTME). | A live walkthrough of a CRM they set up: fields, objects, and routing rules |
| Clay and enrichment | 83.8% of GTM engineers use Clay (State of GTME) | They screen-share a table they built and explain each step |
| APIs and webhooks | In 59% of postings (Cargo) | They explain a workflow they built that calls an outside API |
| Workflow automation | n8n: referenced by 59.6% of GTM engineers. Zapier: 42.5% (State of GTME). | A live workflow, and what happens when a step fails |
| SQL and Python | SQL in 38%, Python in 40% of postings (Cargo) | A light check. Most marketing-side builds don’t need production code. |
| AI and LLMs | Claude or Claude Code in 38% of postings in the latest month (Cargo) | A prompt or agent they run in production, and how they catch bad output |
| Written English | Not tracked in postings | A C1 English assessment, required for every GrowthPair candidate |
It depends on your size and your bottleneck. Cargo’s analysis of 2026 job posts breaks it down like this: at 1 to 50 employees, they report to the founder or the exec who designs the motion. At 51 to 200, they report to growth or marketing if the problem is acquisition, or to RevOps if the problem is systems. From 201 to 1,000, it’s mostly RevOps, revenue systems, or GTM systems. Above 1,000, it becomes its own function.
The survey data is more spread out. In State of GTME 2026, 31.6% of GTM engineers report to the C-suite and 18.4% report into RevOps.
Our rule of thumb: if your GTM engineer will mostly work on inbound, scoring, and campaigns, put them under marketing. If they’ll mostly fix the CRM, put them under RevOps. We compare the two roles in GTM engineer vs RevOps.
U.S. pay sources disagree, so here are the three we trust, with their method.
| Source | Median | Based on | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bloomberry | $127,500 | Job posts with a public pay range (country not stated) | Updated Jan 2026 |
| RevGuild | $150,000 base | 71 U.S. postings with pay | Aug 2026 |
| Cargo | $159,000 | 509 U.S. postings with pay | Jul 2026 |
Add benefits and the number climbs. Benefits were 30% of total compensation for U.S. private-industry workers in June 2026, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That puts a U.S. GTM engineer at about $15,200 to $18,900 a month before recruiting fees.
A full-time Marketing Engineer through GrowthPair costs about $4,000 a month, all-in. That covers the marketer, payroll, benefits, and HR. The full breakdown, with freelancers and agencies, is in what a GTM engineer costs to hire.
It’s a real job with an unstable name. Bloomberry found that 9 of the 10 most common GTM engineer responsibilities also show up in RevOps engineer postings. Growth engineer and marketing engineer cover a lot of the same ground too. We map all three in GTM engineer vs growth engineer vs marketing engineer.
Our take: the title may merge with those over the next few years, but the skill set won’t go away. Someone who can turn a pipeline idea into a working system in a week is worth hiring, whatever you call them. That’s why we vet builders on what they’ve built, not on their title.
We place Marketing Engineers: full-time AI and no-code builders who sit inside your marketing team and build the pages, tools, and automations a GTM engineer would, including Clay tables, n8n workflows, and CRM routing.
Go-to-market. It covers everything a company does to reach and win customers: marketing, sales, and the systems between them.
No. Most GTM engineers build with tools like Clay, n8n, and their CRM, and write some SQL or Python when they need to. Cargo found Python in 40% of GTM engineer postings, so most roles don’t require it.
A GTM engineer builds new pipeline systems. RevOps runs and governs the systems you already have. Clay describes RevOps as keeping the existing revenue machine running.
In the U.S., the median runs $127,500 to $159,000 a year depending on the source (Bloomberry, RevGuild, and Cargo, 2026).
When you know which part of your pipeline is manual and slow, and nobody on your team can build the fix. Clay argues the first GTM hire should be a GTM engineer, before the first account executive. We think that fits product-led companies best. Our guide to hiring a GTM engineer walks through the steps.
Yes. GrowthPair places full-time Marketing Engineers from Latin America and the Philippines who build GTM systems like enrichment, routing, and outbound workflows. They work your time zone, and most teams have their hire working in about 3 weeks.
