Three different jobs share the title. Here’s the one that’s growing, what it ships, and whether it’s here to stay.
A marketing engineer is a marketer who builds. They sit inside your marketing team and ship AI agents, landing pages, lead magnets, and automations without waiting on engineers. Profound launched the title in April 2026, and LinkedIn postings for it rose 29% in a year, per The Wall Street Journal.
A marketing engineer has a marketer’s judgment and a builder’s hands. They find the manual, repeated work in your marketing team and turn it into a system: a page template, an agent, an automation. Then they keep a human in the loop where taste matters, like brand voice and final approval.
That’s close to how Profound, the answer engine optimization company, describes the role. Profound launched the title at its Zero Click event in San Francisco on April 8, 2026. It now runs a marketing engineer job board, a certification through Profound University, and a hackathon. There’s money behind the push: Profound raised a $180 million Series D on September 15, 2026, bringing its total to more than $335 million.
Search for “marketing engineer” and you’ll find three different jobs. Know which one you mean before you post a role or read a salary page.
| AI builder | Marketing data engineer | Technical marketing engineer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | Profound, Figma, Faire, Stripe | NinjaCat and data-heavy marketing teams | Chip and hardware companies like NVIDIA |
| What they do | Build agents, pages, lead magnets, and automations for the marketing team | Build pipelines that move ad, CRM, and analytics data into a warehouse, and keep it clean | Explain a technical product to engineers: demos, tutorials, reference designs, partner training |
| Typical tools | Claude, Cursor, Lovable, n8n, Zapier, a CMS | SQL, Python, Snowflake, BigQuery | The product itself, plus lab and demo setups |
| Background | Marketing first, building added on top | Data engineering with marketing knowledge | Engineering degree and years in the field |
The old meaning still fills job posts and salary pages. NVIDIA’s Technical Marketing Engineer, Telecom posting asks for 8+ years in systems engineering and software development. NinjaCat’s July 2026 guide uses the data meaning. Salary pages mix them up: Payscale lists a $74,614 average base from 14 profiles and doesn’t say which job they hold.
This page, and the role we place, is the first one: the AI builder.
We built these three in-house at GrowthPair. They’re the same kind of work a Marketing Engineer does for your team.
What ties these together: each one would have taken a designer, a developer, and a few sprints. A marketing engineer ships it in days and owns it after. Figma measures its marketing engineer on AI agents deployed, time saved, and revenue, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Marketing ops runs the systems you have. It owns the CRM, the email platform, lead scoring rules, data hygiene, and reporting. A marketing engineer builds new things on top: the page, the tool, the agent. Ops asks if the system is working. The marketing engineer asks what the system should do next.
In a small team, one person often does both. In a bigger one, they work together, and the marketing engineer hands finished builds to ops to run. If your problem is pipeline routing and enrichment for sales, you may want a GTM engineer instead. If you mostly want repeat work automated, see how to hire an AI automation specialist. We compare all three builder titles in GTM vs growth vs marketing engineer.
The best case against it comes from Meghan Gill, who wrote on July 2, 2026 that the systems work already belongs to marketing ops. She expects AI to spread building skills across every marketing role, and predicts marketing engineer won’t last as a separate title in about five years.
The hiring data says it’s real today. The Wall Street Journal reported that LinkedIn postings with the title were up 29% year over year. Live Data Technologies counted 173 people hired into the title in the 12 months to August, up from 98 in the prior period. Figma, Faire, and Stripe have posted builder roles, and Profound says Google has hired one.
Our take: Gill may be right about the title. In five years, every good marketer may build. Today most can’t, and a marketer who can is worth hiring now, whatever the title is called later. Search interest is still small, so expect to explain the title to candidates and to your own team.
U.S. companies pay well for the role. Profound posts $135,000 to $200,000 for its own Marketing Engineer. Add benefits, which were 30% of total compensation in June 2026 per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and that’s about $16,100 to $23,800 a month. The full breakdown, with freelancers and agencies, is in what a marketing engineer costs to hire.
We place Marketing Engineers, who build landing pages, lead magnets, AI agents, and automations inside your marketing team. They work full-time, for one client, in your time zone, for about $4,000 a month, all-in. In their first 30 days, each one earns three certifications: GrowthPair University, Profound Marketing Engineering, and Profound AEO. If you’re writing the role yourself, start with our marketing engineer job description.
They build the tools a marketing team runs on: landing pages, lead magnets like calculators and scorecards, AI agents, and workflow automations. They find manual work and turn it into a system, then keep improving it.
Profound launched it as a role at its Zero Click event in San Francisco on April 8, 2026. The older title, technical marketing engineer, has been used for years at companies like NVIDIA for a different job.
Not always. Profound’s forward deployed marketing engineer role says no coding is required. Its in-house Marketing Engineer role asks for Python or JavaScript. Most marketing teams need someone who builds with AI and no-code tools and can read code when they need to.
The same role. Some companies add “AI” to the title to signal the builder kind. The older technical marketing engineer writes product content for engineers and doesn’t build marketing tools.
Profound posts $135,000 to $200,000 for its own role. Five builder posts on its job board ranged from $132,000 to $242,000 in October 2026. Payscale’s $74,614 average doesn’t separate the builder role from the older technical one.
No. Marketing ops runs your existing systems, like the CRM and email platform. A marketing engineer builds new ones, like pages, tools, and agents. Small teams often have one person doing both.
