Three builder titles in one table: what each one builds, what it pays in the U.S., and which one fits a marketing team.
A GTM engineer builds pipeline systems for sales. A growth engineer usually codes experiments inside the product. A marketing engineer builds AI agents, pages, and automations inside the marketing team. Most marketing teams need the marketing engineer. Profound, which launched that title, posts $135,000 to $200,000 for it.
All three are builders. The difference is where they sit and what they ship. GTM engineers sit near sales and build the systems that fill the pipeline. Growth engineers sit on the product team and write production code. Marketing engineers sit in marketing and build the pages, tools, and AI workflows marketing used to wait on.
The titles are young and they overlap, so job posts mix them up. Clay says it coined GTM engineer in 2023. Profound launched marketing engineer at its Zero Click event in San Francisco on April 8, 2026. Growth engineer is older and looser, and nobody owns it.
We had this problem ourselves. GrowthPair’s builder role was called Growth Engineer until October 26, 2026, when we renamed it Marketing Engineer. The people we place build on the marketing side, and in most job posts “growth engineer” means a software engineer on the product team.
| GTM engineer | Growth engineer | Marketing engineer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it came from | Clay, which says it coined the term in 2023 | Nobody owns it. It’s an older title from product growth teams. | Profound, which launched the role at Zero Click SF on April 8, 2026 |
| What they build | Enrichment, lead scoring and routing, signal-based outbound, AI research agents | Product experiments: signup and onboarding flows, A/B tests, in-app messages, billing pages (PostHog) | AI agents, landing pages, lead magnets, internal tools, and content systems for search and AI answers |
| Who they report to | The founder or a GTM exec at 1 to 50 employees, marketing or RevOps at 51 to 200, mostly RevOps or GTM systems above that (Cargo) | A growth or product engineering lead | A marketing leader. They sit inside the marketing team. |
| How much code | Some SQL or Python. Cargo found Python in 40% of postings. | Production code, every day. It’s a software engineering job. | From none to a lot. Profound’s forward deployed role needs no coding. Faire’s asks for 4+ years of production software. |
| Typical tools | CRM, Clay, n8n, Zapier | The product codebase, plus experiment and analytics tools | Claude, Cursor, Lovable, n8n, Zapier, Webflow |
| Typical U.S. pay | $127,500 median (Bloomberry, country not stated) to $159,000 U.S. median (Cargo) | $193,000 median base across 61 postings (Recruiting From Scratch, June 2026) | $135,000 to $200,000 at Profound. $132,000 to $242,000 across five builder posts on Profound’s job board. |
| Hire one when | Reps research, enrich, and route leads by hand | Your signup or activation funnel leaks and the fix lives in the product | Your marketing team waits weeks on design and engineering for pages, tools, and automations |
Pay is base salary as posted or reported, before benefits. To get the real monthly cost, divide by 0.70. Benefits were 30% of total compensation for U.S. private-industry workers in June 2026, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Profound’s $135,000 to $200,000 band works out to about $16,100 to $23,800 a month.
Product-side growth engineers are software engineers. Marketing-side growth engineers are marketing engineers. The title covers both, and that’s where hiring goes wrong.
PostHog’s guide to the role describes engineers who write code for growth experiments anywhere in the product: signup tests, onboarding, in-app messaging, even a billing service. That’s the job most companies mean when they post “growth engineer.” The pay shows it. Recruiting From Scratch found a $193,000 median across 61 growth engineer postings in June 2026, which is software engineer money.
Some teams use the same title for someone who builds landing pages, lead magnets, and automations with no-code and AI tools. That person is a marketing engineer. If you post “growth engineer” for that work, expect software engineers in your inbox and a pay band set by engineering.
These two are close. Both build with AI and no-code tools, and both work on the go-to-market side. The cleanest split is who uses the output. A GTM engineer’s systems feed reps: enriched records, scored leads, outbound sequences. A marketing engineer’s systems feed marketing: pages, lead magnets, content pipelines, reporting.
Plenty of people doubt either title will last. Meghan Gill argued on July 2, 2026 that the systems work already belongs to marketing ops, and that marketing engineer and GTM engineer won’t survive as separate roles in about five years. Bloomberry found 9 of the 10 most common GTM engineer responsibilities overlap with RevOps.
We agree the names may merge. A marketer who can take an idea to a working tool in a week will stay worth hiring under any title. For the full case, see what a marketing engineer is and GTM engineer vs RevOps.
A marketing engineer. Most marketing teams lose their time to waiting: for a designer to mock the page, for a developer to wire the form, for someone to build the calculator. A marketing engineer removes the wait, and they report to you, so the work lands in your priorities.
Hire a GTM engineer instead if your bottleneck is the pipeline: leads that sit for a day, reps who research accounts by hand. Many marketing engineers can build this too, so ask about it in the interview.
When we’re the wrong call: if the fix lives in your product’s code, hire a software engineer on your product team. We don’t place software engineers, and a marketing engineer shouldn’t be pushing to your production codebase.
We place Marketing Engineers, who build landing pages, lead magnets, AI agents, and workflow automations inside your marketing team, including GTM work like CRM routing and Clay tables. A full-time Marketing Engineer through GrowthPair costs about $4,000 a month, all-in. That covers the marketer, payroll, benefits, and HR. The full math is in what a marketing engineer costs to hire.
Builder titles are easy to put on a resume. We check what someone has built, whatever their title says.
No. A growth engineer usually writes code inside the product, like signup and onboarding experiments. A GTM engineer builds pipeline systems with tools like Clay, n8n, and a CRM, and writes code only some of the time.
Usually not. Most build with AI and no-code tools like Claude, Lovable, and n8n. Some postings ask for more: Profound’s own Marketing Engineer role asks for Python or JavaScript, and Faire’s asks for 4+ years of production software.
Profound, the answer engine optimization company, launched the role at its Zero Click event in San Francisco on April 8, 2026. It now runs a job board and a certification for it.
Growth engineers, because most are software engineers. Recruiting From Scratch found a $193,000 median. GTM engineer medians run $127,500 to $159,000 (Bloomberry, Cargo). Five builder posts on Profound’s job board run $132,000 to $242,000.
Because in most job posts a growth engineer is a software engineer on the product team, and our builders work on the marketing side. We renamed the role on October 26, 2026.
Often, yes. Both build with the same AI and no-code tools. The question is where they spend their week. Pick the title for the bigger bottleneck, then ask about the other in the interview.
